Cannabis Myths Debunked

According to a 2012 survey, cannabis is one of the most commonly used herbal remedies. Those unfamiliar with cannabis tend to associate it with negative connotations. However, Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience says, “Though research on the central effects of cannabis is relatively new, its medicinal use can be traced back to the Chinese Han dynasty, circa AD 25 to AD 220, when it was used to treat rheumatic pain, constipation, malaria, and female reproductive disorders.”

Although cannabis has been around for many years, there is still a lot of misinformation about it.

Which is why we are sharing (& debunking!) three widely accepted cannabis myths.
  • MYTH: Marijuana is addictive.
  • FACT: Certain individuals tend to develop dependencies easier than others. However, The New York Times states, “Few marijuana users develop dependence, some do. But they appear to be less likely to do so than users of other drugs (including alcohol and nicotine).”

  • MYTH: You can overdose on marijuana.
  • FACT: The Open Neurology Journal states, “Fatal overdose with cannabis alone has not been reported.” The individual would have to have other lethal substances in his or her system in order to fatally overdose.

  • MYTH: Marijuana is a gateway drug.
  • FACT: According to Psychology Today, “A study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of School Health has concluded that the theory of a gateway drug is not associated with marijuana, but rather one of the most damaging and socially acceptable drugs in the world, alcohol.”

What other cannabis myths have you encountered and how did you debunk them with cannabis facts? Tell us in the comments!
